I’m still playing the same instance of Don’t Starve. I’ve gone well beyond my initial goal of surviving my first winter. I have multiple winters under my belt and have continued to upgrade my basecamp and my inventory along the way.
I try to spend a portion of the summer exposing new aspects of game play. Conquering a new advisory for what it drops. Gathering materials to create upgrades to weapons and armor. Add something new to the base camp that I see more seasoned players using. Essentially, the summer is where I up my game play while simultaneously preparing for the next winter.
I set fire to a distant forest area for the charcoal and ashes used to craft healing salve and boomerangs
My second winter I farmed the materials needed to have a Winter Hat and Thermal Stone
By my third summer I learned about the Straw Hat and looted a spiked club
Fun Tips
As I gain confidence and experience, I’m more adept at using the environment to my advantage. Playing the solo version of game is harder in some ways. You can’t share the burden of preparation. You either get it done or it doesn’t happen.
Feeding spoiled foods to pigs make the produce manure. Nasty to funny.
I used the Mech Rhino to break down marble, kill clockworks for gears and chop wood!
Muhahaha. All I had to do was direct him to targets, dodge his attacks them pick up the loot!
Having come this far, I want to survive past 100 days and start taking on the seasonal named monsters like Krampus, Deerclops and MacTusk.
Very nice! Can't wait to hear about your Cave adventures! :P
(Disclaimer: I've never made it into the Ruins layer myself, keep getting mauled by the underground hound equivalent and losing focus/interest.)

I'm looking forward to that as well. I feel like I need to be better equipped first. I don't have any of the good weapons or things from the magic crafting tab. Right now I'm on a hunt for Chester so I can turn him into portable food storage during my travels. :-)
