ArcheAge is considered a sandbox MMO and with that comes the freedom to come off the PVE questing rails to do other things in the name of character progression, which includes becoming a pirate or scam artist. For the former to be successful there must be gullible players in the form of sheep.
The dominant scam being run right now on new and inexperienced players is duping them out of their gold during scam property sales. Land is a finite and much coveted resource in ArcheAge. The lack there of is causing some people to act without caution in their attempts to claim a piece of the pie.
AA provides two safe and fool-proof methods for players to participate in land brokering. The easiest method is to interact with your property information icon and type in the name of the person you want to sell the property to and the sale amount. That specific person only can then interact with the same icon to purchase the property for that amount. No fuss, no muss – safe sale to a specific person.
The second mechanic requires purchasing a Market Place item (cash shop) called an ‘Appraisal Certificate’. The current CS price is 300 gems. However, don’t forget that you can have another player purchase the item on your behalf in exchange for in-game gold. This transaction would happen safely via the Trade window.
Once you have an AC, you can apply it to any built property and set your asking price. The game then spawns a lockbox of sorts on the property with a key and the price. Anyone can come to the property and purchase it for the amount specified without interacting with the owner. The owner’s money will be waiting in their mailbox.
Unless you know the player, and even then I still wouldn’t, you should NEVER EVER attempt to purchase land any in fashion other than the two safe methods provided by the game. Players are being scammed left and right, predominately in an attempt to get a piece of property. Players have mounted a name and shame campaign to curtail some of this activity but that’s not going to stop it. The only way to be 100% certain you’re going to get what you paid for is by using the game’s available options.
This is EVE set in fantasy
We’re already seeing ‘PVP banks” and other supposed investment bank guilds forming and spamming chat for investors. EVE has had some successful ones where contributors actually earn interest/profit on their contributions. However, there were also notorious scams too. And so far, all the chat I see are victims of the scams.
We also have gambling operations starting up where you bet x gold to participate in a “roll” to win money. I don’t know if any of these are reputable. The best advice I can give you is to not bet more than you can afford to lose!
Players are trying to educate people as they see certain guilds and individuals attempting to conduct business in chat – lure in the unsuspecting. A scammer list for Kyrios has been started on the forums. Search ‘ArcheAge Scammers <your server name>’ to see if one exists for yours.
Pirate <> Scammer
I don't see pirates and scammers as being the same. Pirates are upfront theives who came at you upfront, with you being fully aware of their intent - take yer shit. You have the opportunity to fight it out and let the best player(s) win.
Gankers/PKers and scammers are an ilk. They're filth that come at you sideways. They're not PVPers. They don't have the balls to fight it out to win. They need unaware and/or easy prey to meet their objectives. Don't be their free meal ticket!! There is NO reason to get scammed in ArcheAge. Being ganked you can't help other than being watchful and avoid leaving yourself 100% vulnerable if you can avoid it.
