Let's Hit Level 50
(this post is a couple of days old now. I've already hit level 50)
I’m level 48 now and figured I might as well get to 50 since the release seems to be a couple of months away at the least. I was hoping that the date posted on Steam for a mid-September would be confirmed by Trion but no such luck. Much too high of a level to pick up where I had previously stopped questing in my early 20s, I rode out to Halcyona to see if there were any quests there worth my time.
When I first arrived there wasn’t any PVP going on although it’s a PVP zone. Halcyona also has a timed war event to encourage players from the opposing factions to engage. The event is a concentrated version of tower defense. The zone goes into a state of war for an hour. However, the quest and tower defense/capture portion only last around 30 minutes.
My First World PVP Event
I happened to be in Halcyona checking quest rewards and levels, as well as picking up teleport points when it went into war. Members of our guild regularly do the event and since I was out there this time, and the first time they’d seen me out there, they asked me if I wanted to go with them and I did.
I followed Fannel to a quest-giver then off to our defense point. Hmm, not a lot of action happened there. The eastern faction didn’t seem to have enough players to form an assault team and simultaneously defend their node. That being the case, a bunch of us rode out to go on offense.
At first we were outnumbered. They had more people defending than we had on the attack. I spent my time healing as best I could. I didn’t have my cloth set in my inventory, leaving me with a rather shallow mana pool albeit a tough target to take out. I stayed toward the frontlines since I was in plate and have a group heal. My heal spells aren’t the best but they beat not getting healed at all. The plate gear served me well. Although I came close several times, I never actually died.
No One Heals in PVP
ArcheAge has made the mistake that many other PVP games have in divvying up contribution points, called Honor Points, which are used to gain rewards for participation. The stupid Honor Points are based mostly on kills. Uh yeah, healers don’t kill people. Do we really have to have this conversation in this day and age of MMO gaming mechanics?? Consequently, there are few, if any, healers. Everyone is doing pew-pew for their HP contribution. *Rolling my eyes*
Whatever, I healed anyway and so did Fannel. I gather that turning in the quest after successfully winning the “war” also provides HP. However, you won’t get nearly as many as if you were killing people during the event. REALLY?!?
On to Victory
We seemed to be losing in our attempt to claim their base. People were dropping like flies for the first few minutes. After we regrouped a second time following a small retreat, the next push in did the trick. It wasn’t fast by any means. We didn’t overwhelm them. However, yard by yard, we gained ground until we were inside the base and then they started dropping like flies.
Fannel and I at least, continued to heal while we attacked their crystal. As to be expected, the opposing faction kept flying in to attack us while we were at it. A few fear bombs went off, dispersing our players in random running patterns. Ha! It reminded me of the Galvin fight in Alterac Valley, where you tried to disrupt the offense attacking your leader in hopes of your offense team beating down the other faction leader first. It’s a last ditch attempt at best and a suicide mission for the caster who runs in to cast fear. I can’t blame them. Hail Mary passes have been known to work on occasion.
The crystal doesn’t go down quickly. Once the enemy faction had been routed from the surrounding area and they gave up trying to fly in, I started doing damage to the crystal too. Several minutes later it was all over. We returned to the NPC for HP rewards which are used to craft high quality gear accessories. You need in them in the thousands and I received 35 for my efforts. Guess it’s going to take a while. Many people stay in the zone immediately following the war to participate in small PVP skirmishes for additional HP. Still severely out geared for PVP I exited stage left. I teleported back to my house to feed the chickens and harvest my olive trees.
