Verniere-itis \ ver-NEER-e-I-tis \ noun
Acute and highly infectious disease impacting the brain’s cognitive ability to experience prolonged enjoyment of a massive title. Most commonly manifested as someone who eagerly waits and shows enthusiasm for an in-development MMORPG right up until a few weeks before the game is due to release, at which time his/her excitement starts a rapid decline, ending in a freefall of disappointment. This is also known as, “can no longer be pleased beyond the first couple of weeks of hype in any game.” The first known case of this disease was reported shortly after the release of Vanguard, and is named after its most notable victim, Ryan Verniere, of MOG Army.
I have Verniere-itis and I suspect that many of my fellow bloggers are suffering from it too. Depending on who I’m reading or listening to at the time, I hear it in varying degrees – but it’s out there. Make no mistake about it - its spindly fingers are spreading across the internet and strangling our beloved virtual worlds. As a sufferer afraid of a chronic onset, what I want to know is who’s got the cure?
I’ve been listening to the MOG Army podcast since the first time Brent, at VirginWorlds mentioned them. I have never missed an episode. I love their zany format, twisted sense of humor and low-brow antics. Gary and Ryan are where MMO news comes to play SouthPark style and it is marvelous in our eyes. The change in Ryan has been gradual, like slow drip coffee. As a listener, Ryan’s increasing displeasure with every MMO that releases has not gone unnoticed. The only exception being EVE Online, which to my knowledge, he hasn’t played as a Regular Joe in quite some time. I should mention that Ryan is employed by CCP but he loved EVE long before that happy event.
